Thin Through the Power of Spirit: Creating Paradise in Your Weight and World
Published in Paperback by DeVorss & Company (April, 2000)
Author: Lucia Capodilupo
Average review score:

Wonderful and Useful
This is a very fine book, well thought through and well written. The author has looked far more deeply and clearly than any other I have read into the emotional and spiritual issues involved with excess weight and losing that weight. More than that, the wisdom presented in this book could be useful for working with any personal issue or simply for personal development. Let us hear more from this author, soon. Strongly recommended for those of us who wish to truly break the superficial approach of quick fixes and really transform our lives.

Powerful and compelling!
This is a wonderful book! In "Thin Through The Power Of Spirit" Lucia Capodilupo shares her ideas of how to "Create Paradise in Your Weight and World". Instead of focusing on fat grams and calories etc. Lucia suggests we look to the Spirit within us all to find permanent weight loss. "The first step to permanent weight loss begins in the soul" according to Lucia. Lucia gives you mental exercises to do to become more aware of your spirituality. By doing so Lucia believes you can accomplish the type of body weight that is right for you. Exercises include learning to practise self forgiveness, to treat your body with love, to learn the art of gratitude etc. The techniques she shares are powerful and life changing. She also shares wonderful techniques to help resist temptation. I think the book is a wonderful guide to developing greater spirituality and creating the healthy life we desire.

Profound ...
An anthropologist once told me that certain human beings are touched by the hand of God. Lucia Capodilupo is one of these creative, insightful, and profound authors. This book is not "yet another" trendy solution to excessive weight gain. Bypassing the quick fix, Lucia focuses on the trials of the human soul. Her writing is clear and her suggestions full of wisdom and promise.

Triumphs of the Heart: Miraculous True Stories of the Power of Love
Published in Paperback by Perigee (08 August, 2000)
Authors: Chris Benguhe and George W. Bush
Average review score:

Heartwarming
Triumphs of the Heart is filled with wonderfully remarkable true stories portraying what the power of love can indeed accomplish. The twenty-five stories will at times astonish you, and remind you at the same time, that miracles can occur when love is the catalyst. Nothing is stronger it seems, than the bonds of love. Healing occurs, lives change and peace enters into one's life.

There is the remarkable story of Keith and Marilyn's love for one another, when Marilyn refused to give up and give in to the doctor's prognosis of permanent brain damage after a serious car crash. Never leaving her husband's side, Marilyn was determined that he would wake up with minimal damage. Keith astonished doctors after awakening six weeks later from a coma with high odds of rehabilitation. Then there is the mother who refused to give up on her son, who led a life of drug dealing for over twenty years, but with his mother's love, he overcame that lifestyle. There also several wonderful stories on the deep bond and love of pet owner's and the pets literally saving their lives.

This book will inspire you, touch you deeply, and remind you that the power of love is miraculous and incredibly powerful.

Truly remarkable
Triumphs of the Heart, says the Amazon editorial review "is a diverse collection of remarkable and inspirational true stories about people who have overcome great obstacles--with love as the catalyst for their heroic endeavors." George W Bush writes the introduction to "twenty-five accounts of heroism and healing depicting the invisible but immensely powerful bonds of love that connect us all." It's remarkable stuff. Take the story of the young child from Kyoto - abandonned and left to die, some might think. Yet what emerges is a genuinely moving story of the ties of love and affection between the writer of the introduction and the oil and manufacturing industries which not only warms the heart, but the entire planet.

Surprise Find of an Excellent Book
I was in Bookstar looking for something to read on the plane to Nashville, when I saw this book prominently displayed in the store. I was going to get this or one of the more recent "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books. The clerk recommended Triumphs of the Heart. I heartily concur. This book made me cry it was so moving. Some of the stories are so unbelievable that it is hard to believe that they are true--but that is the point of the book. THEY ARE TRUE! The power of love is amazing and inspirational. This book lifted me out of the doldrums. I would recommend it to everyone. (And I'm not a Republican--I saw that Mr. Benguhe got George W. Bush to write his introduction.)

PS I saw it under self-help, but it is more inspirational than self-help.

Understanding the Purpose and Power of Woman
Published in Paperback by Whitaker House (July, 2001)
Author: Myles Munroe
Average review score:

THIS WAS THE 2ND BEST BOOK I READ ON RELATIONSHIPS!
I was looking for a book about relationships and I chose to read Understanding the Purpose and Power of Men because it had a subheading that said a book for men and the women who love them. Well I read that one first which made me understand my relationship better with the man in my life now it was my turn to understand what God expected of me in my relationship. I am so pleased that I read this book. I now understand better what God has intended for me to do in my relationship and since gaining this knowledge my relationship with my boyfriend has improved leaps and bounds. God truly blessed Dr. Munroe and I am so greatful for his knowledge.

THIS WAS THE BEST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ ON RELATIONSHIPS!
This was an excellent book. I read Understanding the Purpose and Power of Men first. I was very pleased that I read that one first. It put into perspective many of the issues that I knew existed all along in the difference of men and women but both books offered wonderful advise how to remedy the problems that exist in today's society between men and women. Dr. Munroe is God sent!! He is truly enlightened in the ways of modern day issues between men and women and I am greatful to his messages. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking knowledge in relation to "fixing" the man--woman issue. Both books should be read by the men and women who love each other. The books give a better understanding as to God's purpose in our lives and relationship!

Enlightening
I read this book recently and was amazed at the amount of spiritual insight it gives. Dr. Munroe paints a clear picture of how God created man (male and female), and explains through the word of God that men and women are equal, yet different. I recommend this book to both men and women who are searching for answers to why they behave the way they do and are looking to build better relationships.

Tree of Dreams: The Alchemy of Power, Wisdom, and Strength
Published in Paperback by J. P. Tarcher (06 January, 2003)
Author: Lynn V. Andrews
Average review score:

Tree of Dreams
Story-telling is a time-honored way of teaching in all cultures. In this tradition, Andrews is One of The Great Teachers.
It is encouraging to note that the Wisdom of Native Americans continues to guide us through our transitions and growth. The same Wisdom that helped form the American Constitution.
In our sometimes adolescent society, teachings about conflict and transitions included in this and earlier books by Andrews, can truly benefit our development. Tree of Dreams addresses becoming an Elder.

A powerful and moving metaphysical reflection
Tree Of Dreams: A Spirit Woman's Vision Of Transition And Change by Lynn Andrews is a deeply moving narrative of her quest for growth, spiritual fulfillment, and better understanding of sacred things. Embracing the power of healing and coping with "little deaths" such as divorce or the sudden loss of a job, as well as the great losses of loved ones to "Time's Eternal March", Lynn Andrews' Tree Of Dreams is a powerful and moving metaphysical reflection. Also very highly recommended are Lyn Andrews' previous books: Medicine Woman and Jaguar Woman.

Deserves to be read more than once!
TREE OF DREAMS is not my favorite Lynn Andrews book -- and I've read and loved most of them. That's not to say I didn't like it! Any time spent with Agnes and Ruby is time well spent. And Lynn is a GREAT storyteller. It's just that there isn't as much adventure in this one (until the end) and there's a lot of talk. But very valuable talk it is! She's much more philosophical in this book -- reminds me of Ecclesiastes: We get older, our friends die, we think about the circle of life and death, the transitions, the fact that we are one, that our loved ones never really leave us. Be open. Believe. Move with the flow. It's all about love. Her closing words are golden: "There is magic in the world if you want the world to be magical. If you want life to be special, it will be. ... What matters is your ability to love. ..."

Truth or Dare : Encounters with Power, Authority, and Mystery
Published in Paperback by Harper SanFrancisco (December, 1989)
Author: Starhawk
Average review score:

on how we can change the world
this is a really good book for covens and people that want to make a difference in the world. it emphasises on teamwork. it showes how each one of us needs to change the world. it can become dull, but still a good read.

An excellent resource for group facilitation
This book is an excellent resource for group facilitation -- it's been invaluable to me in the groups I work with. There is a wealth of information on group dynamics, dealing with conflict, structure and group agreements, interspersed with Middle Eastern myth and some beautiful poetry. As you might expect, Starhawk has included many exercises and questions to work through with your group -- helping you build the kind of group that will be nourishing and effective. This is a book I find in the library of many successful priestesses -- it makes a great companion to Amber K's "Covencraft" and Judy Harrow's "Wicca Covens." Still, if I had to have only one of the three, it would be this book, hands down.

A great book for group work, and intermediate witches
I wouldn't recommend this book as a manual for absolute beginners - that's what her other book, The Spiral Dance, was for. However, if you are somewhat well-versed in the practice of the Craft, and are looking for ideas for group work, this is a fabulous book. Written by a master of coven work, Truth or Dare takes bold, assertive steps in showing the reader how to form consciousness-raising groups, lead meditations, and organize spiritual groups, and is full of feminist poetry (with a beautiful retelling of the descent of Innana), trance work, stories of spiritual/political activism, and plenty of inspiration for your own work. Again, to get the most out of this book, it's best to be at least at the intermediate level. And, if you're looking to start a group, but don't quite know how, this is a great book to start with.

VISA : The Power of an Idea
Published in Hardcover by Harcourt Brace Legal & Professional Publications (April, 2001)
Authors: Paul Chutkow, Yumiko Nakagawa, and Matthew Klein
Average review score:

Excellent enlightening book!
If you love to read books about the history of empires and success stories, you will love this! I currently work for Bank of America Bank Card Services (Visa) and I loved it. I knew a lot of the history, but there were a lot of things I didn't know.

It is a must read for anyone who works in this industry or has a card.

Love everything about it and highly recommend it.
If you're looking for the more positive side of the Visa story, or of the impact of American Banking systems, this is a great start. Not a lot about statistical results and analysis, this is more of a story about the people side of building one of the largest global enterprises on the planet, and how that came about during the past 3 decades. Paul Chutkow is not a finanical analyst or banker, so he brings a fresh perspective to the story, and it's a very compelling read. This is also a story about leadership and vision, with the leading characted being Dee Hok. Paul Chutkow has captured many insights into the strategies in building Visa, and how the obstacles were overcome. The pictures of course are wonderful, and the historical views of many different phases of consumerism make this an important read for the student of payment systems. With the new dot-com startups of the day scratching their way in the markets, such as PayPal, BillPoint, and so many others, this book helps us develop a keener appreciation for the visionary and dramtic efforts of the 'fore-fathers' of the payments industry. I really enjoyed learning about the battles Dee Hok worked through to create that little start-up, to eventually be called Visa. The business development and marketing decisions in working with the International Olympic Committee are important for any marketer, and I was introduced to some important people in the the history of credit card fraud. I do recommend this book whole-heartedly, and I will be referring my asociates working in the payments and banking industries read it.

Great read about a slice of American history!
This book is a fascinating read about the history and evolution of "plastic." The book recounts how the visions and innovations of a few revolutionized the world of banking and provides an interesting profile of Visa's rise to global success. Particularly interesting was the story of Visa pioneer and innovator, Dee Hock. Additionally, the historical look at San Francisco in the late 1800s and early 1900s, both in photos and text, was a real treat, especially for this East Coast transplant to the Bay Area. The photos and graphics of Visa's early advertisements are fun to see, especially the Visa "chicks" -- an ad concept that would not fly today. This is a compelling, educational, and even inspirational story -- it's a great read and should be a welcome addition to any coffee table or library.

Voyaging Under Power
Published in Hardcover by International Marine/Ragged Mountain Press (01 May, 1994)
Authors: Robert P. Beebe and James F. Leishman
Average review score:

Great concepts book but smacks of Nordhavn advertisement
Great book covering many aspects of go-slow, go-far boats: what to look for, how to test salesmen, how to check some basic designs, what to do while underway and how to do it, routines, etc with lots of personal examples. If you are interested in this topic and what it requires, this book is just about a "must." My only complaint, and I've only seen the 3rd edition, is the book smacks of Nordhavn advertising. Don't get me wrong, I've been on both the Nordhavn 40 and the 46, and they are unbelievably good boats. Personally, I like the 40' better even if it wasn't $120,000 cheaper than the 46: one head (if they aren't friends, don't let them on your boat!) with more headroom, better engine room, appears to need less elbow grease given the more industrial trim, and (personally) I like her looks better. Robert Beebe may have built Passagemaker for $43,000 in 1962. Nordhavn wants $429,000 for the 40 and $549,000 for their 46. The kicker? They suggest you tack on an additional $100,000 in "options" (half of which I don't really consider optional). Also recommend the "Troller Yacht Book" (ISBN 0393047091)

The best
Voaging under power is the best naval book I ever read. It is a must to all interested on passagemaking.

Excellent book for all interested in trawlers
I had heard this was the best book on the subject of trawlers. The book exceeded myexpectations. While Beebe's original formulas and examples stillwork, I especially appreciated the update, and references to current boats being built.

Excellent!

The Way of Power: Poems
Published in Paperback by Hohm Pr (September, 1996)
Authors: Red Hawk, Red Hawk, and Red
Average review score:

Red Hawk puts his intense life experiences in his work.
I have known Red Hawk all of my life & he is one of the most intense questioners of the meaning of life & death on this planet. Some of his narratives relate to his own life directly & some indirectly. He wondrous storyteller.

Good book on finding meaning in a meaningless world!
Buy this book...it will change your life

Finally...
Finally a book of poems that speaks of my own experience and understanding of the world!! This book and Red Hawk's two previous books are some of the best poetry I've ever read...and I read poetry like a fiend. As a high school English teacher, I am always on the hunt for poems whose literal meanings are clear enough for students to be interested right off but which also offer a wealth of deeper meaning once the surface is scratched--Red Hawk's poems are perfect for this. My students love him and so many have begun reading poetry on their own after this introduction!! (This, of course, is the English teacher's secret fantasy--a world of poetry readers!!) I, myself, am always moved by the depth of the poems themselves and I always notice something previously missed. If you read only one poem in your life, read "For Rain Drop Who Grows Up" -- it is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful tributes to a child I have ever read.

Word and Power Church, The
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (01 February, 2002)
Authors: Douglas Banister and Doug Banister
Average review score:

Changing times for a changing church
This book is easy and quick-paced reading. It focuses on the strengths and weaknesses of both evangelically-based (word) and charismatically-based (power) churches. The thrust of the book is churches which are focused on the extremes of either. What I like about the book is that it does not attempt to change one's view (as flawed as it may be) on the "ideal" church and its worship services and functions, it simply, yet effectively, directs the reader to biblically-based and historically-based alternatives to understanding God and the ways that He works. Be they through verses in the Bible or a more dramatic emotional experience. I do not agree with every single thought neither am I moved by every single story and example. However, that does not make the ideas proposed any less effective. Having said that, I am going to order a dozen of these books and give them out to other open-minded Christians who are ready to be at the forefront of a changing church. God help us all.

An incredible work for those looking past dry orthodoxy...
Banister pens an incredible work for those looking to move beyond dry orthodoxy and into passionate, spirit-driven relationship with Christ. He pushes you to take that plunge into the unknown, to that place you so much want to go, to where you feel God tugging you... that place where what's going on in your heart matches what's going on in your head... to where you not only know ABOUT God, but have an experience of Him.

I like Banister's honest approach (i.e., he speaks of his role as a pastor, and of preaching, but still feeling this tension). He doesn't back down from his own shortcomings, offers a clear perspective about his own biases, and never fails to let you know where he stands...

His goal... it seems it to bridge that gap between orthodox evangelicalism and passionate pentecostalism-- and show us that we (he writes from the side of evangelicalism) need not sacrifice thick Truth in order to worship-- and experience God passionately, as our "Charismatic" brothers and sisters do. Nor, do they have to negotiate their passions when seeking out deeper revelations of God in His word. It's not that you have to choose this OR that, Banister suggests. Rather, we are invited to experience God in Word and in Spirit-- in Word and in Power-- or, as Jesus suggests, in Spirit and in Truth.

Is an excellent book to read, as well, if you are coming from the Pentecostal side of Christianity, and are looking for solid theological footing, and wondering if you must comprimise your style of worship, your exercise of the prophetic gifts, etc., in favor of depth. This is not to suggest that you would lack depth simply because you are coming from that perspective. And, Banister conveys that well.

We can learn from each other. Indeed, we SHOULD learn from each other. For we are one in Christ.

This book is excellent!!
Are you tired of church? Do you feel that there is something missing from your normal church experience? If you can answer "yes" to these questions - read the book!! Doug Banister asks some real hard questions and gives some surprisingly clear answers. You will be enlightened.
